How did you develop an interest for carp fishing?
I imagine like many, I was introduced to the world of angling through my father. Once a week he would take my brother and I to overgrown magical pools a short distance from our family home. Usually we’d catch trench and roach but as soon as I felt the awesome power and grace of carp my world changed; from that moment onward my dreams have been filled with iridescent golden scales.
Elaborate on your type of angling, your angling style.
Well, I have the great good fortune of being able to pursue my dreams. Three years ago I changed everything, I built a wooden house on wheels and left the UK. I now travel with my partner around Europe discovering wild habitats in which to angle for carp. We take a keen interest in botanical knowledge and plant medicine, supplementing our diet with wild foods where possible. For us a simple low impact existence is essential, it affords us the time to do what we love.
What is the most memorable angling moment thus far?
Crouching between the reeds just before a drop off, I coaxed the fish nearer until I saw it hover over the folds of my net. For a moment I thought it was smaller than I had anticipated but when I gazed down into the mesh it was far bigger than I could have imagined. Time seemed to slow to an excruciating crawl. It was as though I was dreaming and by some grotesque coincidence I’d caught the one I had been seeking; some kind of appalling subconscious trickery. But it was no dream.
I had hardly a moment to take note of the synchronicity of events. My energy was focussed on lifting the fish for long enough to capture a photo. It was humongous! Never did I imagine that I would cradle such an enormous carp.
It was a recommendation from a friend I have much respect for.
Do you engage in other activities regarding carp angling?
As well as running Carp Watercraft I write monthly articles for Carpology, CC Moore and Trakker as well as one off pieces for the likes of Monky Climber and Fallons Angler. My skills reside in creative areas like filmmaking, photography and writing but I also take a keen interest in conservation and plant medicine.
Which quote suits you best?
“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.” – Terrence McKenna
